Moulin Kann - Moulin A Canne - Old fashion wooden Sugarcane mill in Haiti

Moulin Kann - Moulin A Canne - Old fashion wooden Sugarcane mill in Haiti

Here is a photo of an old fashion wooden sugarcane mill in Haiti (moulin kann in Creole, moulin a canne in French), still in operation.

This specific sugar cane mill sit in countryside village of Savane Haleine, outside of Maissade, Centre, Haiti.

These wooden sugarcane mills are still in operation in Haiti they are moved by two cows or two horses tied to the lever that you see extending out.

As the horse turns it, one of two people feed the sugars cane in between two big wooden rollers and the cane juice falls in the big canoe looking wooden crate below the rollers.

It is still the middle ages in some parts of the country, I am sorry to say but it is one more thing you will get to visit if you decide to go on a road trip while visiting Haiti

Anba Kolonbye - Under The Granary - Haiti Countryside, Maissade

Anba Kolonbye - Under The Granary - Haiti Countryside, Maissade

In Haiti, Anba Kolonbye (under the granary) on the Haitian countryside is where you will find the old wooden chair (chez pay la), the old Wooden 'Pilon' (How do you say pilon in English?)

Anyway, the pilon under the granary is what I am sittin on. Haitians use it to mash their grains (pile mayi, pile pitimi, pile diri), to remove the husk from the seeds before cooking it.

Yep... Not everything goes to the mill.

How did we go from 'anba kolonbye' to milling grains. LOL

This photo was taken on the the Haitian town of Maissade, It's like a village a few miles from Hinche, Centre, Haiti.
